Our week is always hyper-frontloaded, and Mondays are the worst. Tonight included dog walking, dinner, marketman's weekly 8pm conference call with Vietnam, garbage night and my Monday Photoshopping fun. So dinner had to be fast (but good!). Taking a page from my sometimes-neglected Japanese side, I whipped up omuraisu - basically, fried rice in an omelette:
Typical ingredients are food scraps, rice and eggs, so I stir-fried some spam and veggies (onions, zucchini, mushrooms, frozen peas) with leftover rice, and then folded them into an omelette. The finishing touch is a squiggle of ketchup (I swear, I'm not making it up), and some kimchi on the side (according to marketman, it just isn't a meal without it). Oishii!
Since marketman already has a few photos with Cal headcoach Jeff
Tedford, we decided it was mieko14's turn!

Late-August/Early-September rolls around and you would think everyday was Christmas in the Myers-Nakamura-Yoo world. But replace red and green and tinsel with blue and gold and pom poms. In 10 days Cal kicks off against Maryland in Berkeley, but Saturday is Cal Fan Appreciation Day at Memorial Stadium, and being the really cool cats (translation: big football dorks) that we are, we'll be there. Oh no, we're not even planning our first tailgate yet - first thing's first. Tonight I began the process of unearthing our fan gear in preparation:

If you are paying close attention, you'll spot a few familiar items: marketman's Jeff Tedford bobblehead, his very school spirited Cal razor courtesy of Angelica (I have a strong inkling this one won't make it through stadium security) and one very irked dog.

I had been coveting the haupia pie at McDonald's (knowing full well
that it probably paled in comparison to the real thing but still
curious about the fact that it was one of the only foods served all
day). After a particularly disappointing Korean meal in Kihei, I
convinced the hubby to pull into the drive-thru for dessert. He became
noticeably uncomfortable as we pulled up to the menu, and finally
turned to me to ask "How do you pronounce it again?" So I reminded him
that usually vowels are annunciated separately, but in "haupia" the a
and u are sort of slurred together. Looking back, it appears I may
have over-complicated the issue because when posed with the question
"May I take your order?" he blurted out "I would like two HOWpia
pies." But no harm, no foul. They were awfully tasty and totally made
up for bad kalbi and neng myun.
